Ukraine: Draft Law Threatens Trade Union Rights
Parliament Should Protect Workers, Withdraw Draft Amendments
https://www.hrw.org/news/2020/07/29/ukraine-draft-law-threatens-trade-union-rights
Ukraine’s parliament is considering draft amendments to the country’s trade union law that, if adopted, would impose serious and unjustified restrictions on workers’ rights to freedom of association, Human Rights Watch said today.
They would also violate Ukraine’s international commitments to uphold labor standards.

Law 5371, which strips back labour protections, has been ratified. Is there more to come?

On 17 August, Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelenskyi ratified Law 5371, which removes rights for workers at small and medium-sized companies.
It will be effective for as long as the country is under martial law – a qualification added at the last minute, under pressure from trade unions.
Under the new law, people who work for firms with up to 250 employees will now be covered by contracts they negotiate as individuals with their bosses, rather than the national labour code.

MORE ATTACKS ON RIGHTS OF UKRAINIAN WORKERS

In a significant assault on worker rights in Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelensky last week signed into law legislation that deprives around 73 percent of workers of their right to union protection and collective bargaining.
“For more than 15 months, the Federation of Trade Unions of Ukraine, in solidarity with other trade unions, with support of the international community, actively opposed promotion of the anti-labor draft law,” the Federation (FPU) said in a statement.

The suspensions have more to do with the post-Euromaidan polarisation of  Ukrainian politics than genuine security concerns related to the Russian invasion.
